Unless they are using an iPad or other kind of screen, my kids are probably complaining of boredom. And since I don’t let them stay glued to a screen all day, I hear the cry “I’m bored” on a regular basis! I know there are tons of fun, creative things they could be doing, but they can’t always come up with an idea. Which is why I made them an “I’m Bored” Jar!
I came up with this idea when a group of bloggers, including myself, went shopping at At Home. Six of us decided to buy the same jar and use it in different ways. It’s been awesome to see all the inspiration that came from the same jar.
My idea to make an “I’m Bored” Jar was my own, but a quick internet search showed me that I’m not as original as I thought. Lots of other creative moms have made one, but that’s okay because our house didn’t have one yet, and now we do!
Making an “I’m Bored” Jar is simple and doesn’t really require a tutorial. All you need to do is get a jar, preferably one big enough for little hands to reach inside. Then write or print out lots of different activities onto slips of paper and put them inside. When you hear that familiar cry, just remind your little ones that lots of great ideas are just waiting for them inside the jar!
Remember that this jar is supposed to make your life easier, not harder, so be sure that the activities are simple enough for them to do on their own. Here’s a few ideas:
- Draw a picture
- Find a cool rock in the backyard
- Name all of your stuffed animals
- Make a card for a friend
- Play a board game
Just print out your ideas, cut them out, and put the strips into the jar. Doesn’t get much easier than that!
I actually left the jar out before I had filled out the paper slips, and my oldest found it and started filling out his own ideas on the papers! So you can get your kids to help you with ideas. Maybe that can be their activity the next time they are bored!

Now that you’ve solved your boredom issues, be sure to check out the different ways my blogging friends used this same jar. From drinks to desserts, gift ideas to date night, you’ll definitely be inspired to go buy some more jars!
