This is what I Love You looks like | Unique Mother’s Day Gift

by Megan

I think what most moms want on Mother’s Day is a little recognition and a little relaxation. But sweet gifts from the heart are of course always welcome. And if you can pull off an extra unique Mother’s Day gift, then extra props to you! That is exactly what my husband did a few years back, when he gave me a special present that was unlike anything I had seen before!

Can you tell what it is?

When he gave it to me he said, “This is what it looks like when we say we love you.”

A few days earlier, he banished me to the car while he got the kids to record themselves saying, “I love you.” He explained to them that it was part of a present for me, and he demonstrated what they were supposed to do by leaning close to his computer and saying, “I love you!”

He said that Vanessa then leaned forward right away and said, “I love you…Mommy!” So then Carter said the same thing: “I love you, Mommy!” And that’s what you see in the frame.

Love these little buggers!

He took screen caps of the audio waves and then prettied them up in Illustrator. Daniel’s is first, Vanessa’s is in the middle, and Carter’s is on the bottom. He said it was supposed to be three different frames, but he ended up doing it as a collage in one frame. I love it, and it’s currently hanging up next to my bed where I can see it before I fall asleep and first thing in the morning.

Pretty great husband.

Well that was a few years ago, and now it’s even easier to make a gift like this yourself. My husband is a composer who often works with programs that show sound waves, so he had an edge. But I found some sites that will create a visual for you, when you upload your own sound file!

The first site, convert.ing-now.com, will generate a waveform image when you upload your audio file. There are plenty of free phone apps that allow you to easily record your voice, so do that first, then upload the file to the site, choose from a selection of colors and other options, and then download the file! Super simple.

I also found SoundViz which offers beautiful artwork prints or downloads of your sound clips. You owe it to yourself to go check out this site right now. The prints are so gorgeous, and some people have even turned the waveform art into tattoos!

What a unique, special Mother’s Day present! Daniel told me to expect flowers and breakfast in bed from now on! Haha! He knows how I feel about birthdays and holidays; I just care that they are acknowledged in some form. Sometimes it’s a big present, sometimes it’s a small present, sometimes it’s a secret trip or a song he’s written for me, and sometimes it’s just the acknowledgment, and that’s really all I need!

Happy Mother’s Day!

I completely agree. I love any acknowledgement and I specially love creativity.

I had never imagined acknowledging those without children on Mother’s Day. Maybe I’m insensitive. There are people who acknowledge siblings on a child’s birthday so they don’t have to feel “left out”. I also feel the equal opportunity/politically correct has gotten out of control. I think your friend is awesome!
