Starmites and The Bully!

by Megan

So this year I’m back at the BASIS school, where I choreographed You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown last year. This year they have two after school drama groups (a beginning and an advanced), so I’m choreographing TWO musicals! I couldn’t be happier! Oh yeah, I get paid for it, too.

The younger kids are doing a show called The Bully. This is a one-act, probably about an hour long, but it has some good music in it, and I have some good ideas for the dances. There are 27 of them, so it will be a little bit of a challenge getting them all up there! Should be fun though.

The older kids are doing Starmites, which is a sci-fi musical comedy. This one I’m really excited about, because there are a ton of songs that call for heavy dancing, and they are all different. There are songs in the style of Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, the Temptations, and a big swing number. There’s also a big gospel number and another one that is really bouncy and fun. I’m really excited to get working on all of them, and to watch old music videos for inspiration and style. I already started working on the swing number with the kids, and they loved it. They are so much fun to work with, because they are still young enough for it to be cool to be excited about something.

I’m realizing how hard and fast we are going to have to work, though, considering they only meet once a week! They won’t be performing until late February/early March, but I’ll probably have to be done at the end of January (I figure two weeks before my due date will probably be a good time to stop). Hopefully I’ll be able to go to the dress rehearsals and fix up dance stuff after the baby comes and before the shows, but we’ll just have to see.

So these shows, along with our choir and other holiday activities and commitments, are going to make these next few months busy ones, but I couldn’t be happier with this opportunity!!!
