Shaping Up, with Kelly!

by Megan

Happy Monday, everyone! Aren’t Mondays great? Time for a fresh start, a new week in which to accomplish your goals and set new ones. It’s like every 7 days we get a do-over. Or do you hate Mondays, and therefore me too right now? Anyway…

Let me introduce you to one totally awesome chick. I do not even remember how I found Kelly’s blog, but I loved her right away! She is laid-back, funny, and totally sweet! But enough about my girl crush.

Kelly and I wanted to blog swap, and as we were discussing topics, we realized that we were both training for a half marathon, within a few weeks of each other! So obviously that’s what we decided to write about. She’s here today sharing her experience, and I’m over at her place sharing mine! Take it away, Kel-bells (that’s what I call her in my head…creepy?).

Hey guys!  I’m happy to be blog swapping with Megan today!  My name is Kelly and I blog over @ The Houtz House Party.  I blog about what my life is like being a wife, a mama to 4 little people, a cook, a sometimes crafter and a friend of Jesus.  Come say hi.  I’d LOVE to meet you!

When Meg and I decided to blog swap we decided we’d both share our journey through training for our 1st half marathon.  I can’t wait to hear all about it from Megan because you see that ship sailed without me.  Yep, I am not running.  Gulp.

You see I started the training and something happened.  Or maybe nothing happened.  I’m not sure BUT the truth is I never got past 3 miles.  For you non-running peeps a half marathon is 13.1 miles so you see I need to run a lot farther than 3 measly miles.

Let me take you back some years…ok..cough…cough…at least 10.  You see that’s back when I was a runner and in the best shape of my life.  I was young and self-centered and pretty “cute” I thought!  (Please tell me you know I’m being sarcastic here!)  Ha!  I continued the “cuteness” for the most part until about 25 or 26 and then something slowly happened.  Corporate America took over, marriage got comfortable, then came baby boy, THEN 17 months later, twin boys and then 14 months later baby girl.  Oh, there were spurts of that old “cute” self during my fitness hiatus.  And if you are/were a fitness fanatic you will understand me when I say even during that “hiatus” I was “still working out”.  I always had….really my love for working out started probably when I was about 15 or so and so you can see it has been a part of my life for a long time.

That brings me to today.  I’m a 31 year old mother of 4, wife to one.  At times I still think I’m that “cute” little number that I was at 21.  Then I look in the mirror.  It’s not all bad BUT stress and kids and too many wrong food choices and too little sleep takes its toll now doesn’t it?

My thought behind training for a half marathon was simple:  1) it is on my bucket list 2) it’s a good way to get my body back after 4 kids.  My reality is I haven’t quite figured out how fitness fits into my life now.  I haven’t figured out what works for me at this stage in my life.  Do I still enjoy working out.  Heck yeah!  I LOVE IT!  I love to sweat and I love how I feel after.  I actually enjoy lifting weights and that empowered feeling it gives you.  My reality is that I haven’t figured out what to do to get my groove back.  I haven’t figured out what time is REALLY best for me to work out.  Morning is ideal…get it out of the way.  But…

Will I ever do a half marathon?  I can honestly say I’m 98% sure I will.  Will I be running the AF half in September?  No.

How about you?  Do you work out?  Do you run?  How do you get and keep your mojo?

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Kelly! I hope that you are able to get back into training sometime in the future and run the race you want to run! I don’t know if I could keep up the training if I had four little ones to worry about! PS, you look awesome, so you must be doing something right!
Don’t forget to read my post over at Kelly’s blog, and find out how I’m doing with my training!
Any other runners out there?

Proud of you Kel, for shooting for that goal no matter how long it takes you…with all those kids, girl, I completely understand…I was a work out addict (never running though) up until last summer when life got busy with travels and when I returned home, I got completely lazy and am now looking for a way to recover myself. I hate how weak and incompetent I feel when I’m not working out…

This is all too familiar for me. I am a runner, at heart. I ran cross country and track in high school. I love to run. But making time now that the baby is here??? It seems impossible. I stick her in the jogger and have spurts of real “productivity” and then I get sick or something and fall of the wagon. &plusalso my mil is a divine baker of sweets and, yeah…enough said. :) Maybe one day we can both cross that half marathon off our bucket list!
