I have been singing since I could talk. My mom likes to tell stories about taking walks with me in the stroller, while I sang the whole way. I was always in school choir, and by high school I realized that it was something I was truly passionate about.
I try not to have regrets, and I’m glad I chose to pursue theatre in college, but part of me always wished I had studied music, specifically voice. I had a really good start, but I know I’d be much better if I’d studied for four years at the collegiate level. I am a solid classical high soprano, but the style of singing required for musical theatre has sometimes shown my weaknesses and limitations. Long story short, I’m not a belter. At least not a super skilled one.
One of my 30 Before 30 goals is to “take singing lessons and extend my belt range” so when I got the chance to try out online singing lessons and write a review of the Roger Love Singing Academy, I went for it!
You might be saying, how can you even take voice lessons online? And it’s true, there is nothing better than to have an actual face-to-face lesson with a teacher. But to study with such a professional with an incredible resume of performers would be out of the question for most people. Now it’s not!
Even being a singer my whole life, having lots of experience and training, I learned things in the first lesson that I had never understood before, such as proper breathing techniques and how the larynx works. Roger explains everything very clearly and articulately, and it’s hard not to love him.
From the first video, it was clear that Roger knows his stuff. He has worked with some A-list celebs and professionals, and at first I thought he was going to come across as patronizing, but he didn’t at all. He talks to you as if you were really together, and he gives lots of encouragement and compliments. I found myself talking back to him at times! He’d tell me I was his favorite student, and I’d say, “Oh stop, Roger, you’re too kind.”
The singing academy takes place over 10 weeks, with lessons and instructional videos for each week. In addition, Roger utilizes his creation, “Love Notes,” to put his principles to the test with real, well-known songs. Love Notes guides the singer through the song, showing him or her which voice placement to use, when to breathe, and when to use vibrato.
The instructional videos range from vocal warm-ups, singing technique, and suggestions for things such as a singer’s diet and overcoming stage fright. There is also an exercise studio for daily vocal exercises, as well as bonus videos that cover other related topics.
Did I like it? Sure! I found the informational videos very interesting, and when Roger added one of his female students to the studio to help us ladies hear how the exercises should sound, that was very helpful to me.
The course left me wishing I could work with Roger personally, so he could tell me specifically what is going on with my voice and how to improve. But if you sign up for the advanced course, you get that opportunity! In the advanced course you send a recording of yourself singing to Roger, to get real, live feedback on your voice.
Whether you are an experienced or an aspiring singer, you will find information and exercises in this course that will help you to improve. Not sold yet? Get four video lessons for free, and give it a try before you buy!
Final word from me: I am still very interested in finding a local teacher to work with in person, but I gained valuable knowledge by watching and singing along with the videos offered in the Roger Love Singing Academy.
