One day into our potty training attempt with Harrison, his big brother Carter burst into our room to let us know that Harrison had used the potty!
Um…he what??
True story. After just an afternoon and a morning of practicing some potty routines, Harry had in fact taken off his Pull-Up and gone in his potty (#2, no less)! We totally missed it, and he went back to playing in the backyard (in the nude!) without informing us of his achievement.
Well of course I was thrilled and put him into a pair of undies right away…which he peed in. And then he peed in a second pair. So our potty training is clearly far from finished, but I was definitely struck with how a brief effort at practicing a routine had such a big effect.
This post is sponsored by Pull-Ups.
Here’s what we did:
Potty Training Routine
- Ask him to say, “Mom I have to go potty.” This way he gets used to telling us he has to go.
- Walk with him to the potty, have him slide down his Pull-Up, and sit on the potty.
- Wait for a minute or two while reminding him to go in his potty (usually he just sat there, but that’s okay!).
- Have him stand up, slide up his Pull-Up, and “flush” his potty.
- Help him wash his hands.
He got a sticker for every successful step, which he loved. When he didn’t want to do his potty routine, all I’d have to say is “stickers!” and he’d be excited again!
I’m confident that if we stick to this routine, it won’t be long before Harry is fully trained. And just in time for baby sister to come along! *sigh*
Along with stickers, Harry also gets excited about the characters on his Pull-Ups® Training Pants, like the Lightning McQueen Pull-Ups we just bought at Sam’s Club!
The package even came with a little Cars backpack. Perfect for carrying around his favorite cars!
Along with the Pull-Ups, we also grabbed a package of Cottonelle® FreshCare® Flushable Cleansing Cloths, a perfect combination for the sometimes messy business of potty training! These wipes are flushable, totally sewer- and septic-safe, and alcohol-free.
Pull-Ups has teamed up with potty training experts to form the Pull-Ups® Potty Partnership, to help take the guesswork out of potty training.
The Pull-Ups® Potty Partnership is a personalized, comprehensive program that is tailored to work with your child’s unique personality, on their schedule and according to how they learn. The key to success in potty training is working with your child’s personality, not against it.
