An Ode to Swiffer, and some others

by Megan

I have spent the last two days deep cleaning my house (have I mentioned I love my house??), and I would like to offer some reviews of certain cleaning products that I use and love. Doesn’t get more domestic than this, folks.

First and foremost, I love OxiClean stain remover. Thank you Billy Mays, and may you rest in peace. OxiClean stain remover will take any stain out of clothing (except maybe house paint- I gave up on that shirt). But it works wonders on Carter’s clothing! I mean Carter my son, not Carter the brand, although most of his clothes are, in fact, Carter’s brand clothing. We move on. In addition to doing wonders with clothing stains, the other day the three of us were chilling on our couch when Daniel and I were just too late to stop Carter from writing on the couch with a ballpoint pen. I grabbed the OxiClean and the pen marks are gone. And just the other night when I was cleaning my living room, I noticed that there were a whole ton more pen marks that we hadn’t seen (it’s a dark couch). I grabbed the OxiClean again, and it worked just as well on days-old pen marks. Every mother should have a spray bottle of Oxiclean in her home.

Next, I love Swiffer products. I’ll say it, I never understood how mopping worked before I got a Swiffer WetJet. The mops I used would get so gross and the water would be useless after one or two dips, that I was probably making the floors worse. The Swiffer WetJet uses disposable cleaning pads that stick right on the mop and pull right off when you want to throw them away. The cleaning fluid bottle clicks right into the mop handle, and there is a button you press near where you hold the mop that causes the cleaning solution spray out (it takes a few batteries). So you spray an area, you mop it, you spray an area, you mop it. I think you get the idea. I can use one cleaning pad for all the floor areas in my house, and then I just throw it away. Love it!

Also in the Swiffer line, I enjoy their new 360 degree dusters. No more dirty dusters lying around the house! They are disposable, so as soon as your duster gets too, well, dusty, you just pop off the soft part and put a new one on the stick. Love it!

I do have to say that although I do possess a Swiffer sweeper, I’m not a huge fan of it. If you just need to get dust bunnies and dirt off your floor, then this is the tool for you. However, it doesn’t get any small objects or food pieces (which is mostly what I’m sweeping up), so when I used it, I ended up sweeping afterward, which just defeated the purpose!

Another household cleanliness product I love is the Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel. It comes in two scents, one of which is colored blue and the other is green, and the gel is in a small tube. To apply, you press the tube against the inside of your toilet bowl, push a button, and pull the tube away. A perfectly proportioned, nice-smelling circle of gel is now stuck to your toilet bowl, and each time you flush, the water flows over the gel and helps to clean your toilet and make it smell nice. The gel gets washed away within about a week, and then you just stamp it again! There are 7 stamps in each tube. In addition to the usefulness of the product, it is way fun to use!

So that’s my review of my favorite cleaning products. I felt everyone should be entitled to the joy that these fine products bring to me as I clean my home. ;)
