What To Do At Disney When It’s Raining

by Megan

You’ve spent time and money getting to Disney, and you are finally settled in when it starts to downpour outside! What are you going to do now? Most of the outdoor rides aren’t going, and you don’t want to get soaked. This isn’t going to be much fun!

But wait! There are tons of things you can do if it’s raining at Disney!

There are lots of fun things to do at Disney, no matter what the weather!

Growing up on the East Coast, Disney World was our Disney park of choice. We made several treks down from Maine, and so we were well acquainted with Florida’s tendency to downpour for short periods of time in the afternoon!

One of my parents’ favorite stories is from the time we were in a gift shop, because of the rain, and they decided to make a run for the car in the parking lot, through the rain. We made it all the way to the car when they realized that both my brother and I were still holding figurines from the gift shop!

Shoplifting aside, there are lots of fun things you can do at Disney Parks, to keep the rain from ruining your day!

Note: Be prepared for it to rain! Bring along umbrellas and ponchos if possible, and if you are reading this at Disney right now while it’s raining, find somewhere selling these items and purchase them. It will be worth it!

First of all… Go out! The rain won’t melt you! (This is where that umbrella and poncho comes in!)

Ride indoor rides

When it’s raining, there are so many people that think it’s not even worth the trip, which means that the lines will be crazy short. Contrary to popular belief, there are many rides that still run in the rain, including all of the indoor rides. Think Peter Pan’s Flight, Pinocchio, Mr. Toad, Snow White, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain…lots of fun rides are under cover!

The Land or The Seas Pavilion at Epcot both have excellent rain options: hang out with Nemo and explore the reef. Innovations at Epcot also includes many family activities located indoors. This also means that if it clears up in the middle of the day or shortly after raining, you will be the first in the line for your favorite ride!

Go on a water ride

The water rides are also typically running. It’s already wet outside, why not? Splash Mountain and Grizzly River Run are two of the options at Disneyland.

Take the monorail

If you aren’t up for running out in the rain, try out a monorail tour instead. You will stay dry and your concierge at your hotel or resort will be able to point you in the right direction for this. There are many themed tours where you can pick up souvenirs along the way!

Stay inside

At Disney there are a lot of indoor activities that can be done. Maybe it’s a good time to head inside a restaurant for a meal, maybe even character dining!

The Disney Animation Building in Disney California Adventure has several activities under one roof, and you could hit them all while waiting out the storm!

Visiting the Princesses is also a great option!

Or catch a show, like the Disney Junior stage show in Hollywood Land.

You could also check out Downtown Disney for some indoor shopping and entertainment fun. The AMC movie theater Downtown has 24 screens and is bound to be showing something that your family will enjoy. You can even dine while you watch!

Splitsville is a classic bowling alley that is also located in the Downtown area.  Plan ahead for rain so that you know where to go and how to get there in case it does happen.

Rent a cozy space

Using vacation rentals might be the best idea yet. Renting a space that feels like home for your trip will allow you to have a nice relaxing day if storms decide to hit while you are there. You will be able to sit back, relax, and watch the rain fall. All while being in a cozy little space spending time with your family.

Keep smiling

The only thing that can really ruin your trip is a bad attitude. No one can change the weather, so make the best of it! Best case scenario- everyone still has a magical time, and at worst, you’ll have a story to tell!

Chances are the sun will come back out, and you’ll be outside adventuring again in no time!
