One of my children’s favorite Mexican cultural celebrations is Dia de Los Muertos. Today we are preparing for the holiday by making a super easy, kid-friendly craft: Paper Plate Sugar Skulls with colorful General Mills cereals!
When my husband and I met, I was immediately swept into a vast and rich culture. My husband is Mexican-American, and although he and his mother were born here in the United States, they have maintained many traditions from Mexico. After my children arrived, I wanted them to experience as many things as they could from their heritage. I enrolled them (and me too!) in Ballet Folklorico (traditional dancing from different regions in Mexico) and tried to tie in our family activities to their Mexican roots.
Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a time to celebrate and remember those who have passed away. Special foods are prepared in honor of, and left for, the souls of the departed. Families gather together and remember relatives that have gone on by telling stories, looking at pictures and even visiting the graves of relatives. Dia de Los Muertos begins at midnight on Oct 31 and ends on November 2nd. Although it can be a bit “spooky” for many littles, south of the border, and in many parts of America, it’s tradition!
Cereal Con Cariño wants you to bring a little bit of Dia de Los Muertos to your home this Halloween by making an easy Sugar Skull Craft using General Mills Cereal! You may be seeing Sugar Skulls everywhere this year, but did you know that sugar skulls are made as an offer for the deceased during Dia de Los Muertos? They often will have the name of the departed across the forehead of the sugar skull.
