Back Up Your Facebook {tutorial}

by Megan

A while back I started copying-and-pasting my Facebook page, month-by-month, and pdf-printing it, and saving it as a file on my computer. I wanted to do this because I record a lot of Carter’s cute sayings and other memories on my Facebook page, and I wanted to keep all those status updates.

When I first started doing this (before Timeline was mandatory), I wanted to go back into my Facebook archives as far as I could, but that was difficult, because every time I clicked “older posts” the page would extend to include older posts, rather than opening a new page, which meant the current page got larger and larger, and slower and slower!

With Timeline, it’s easier to go back and view past posts, but my method of copying-and-pasting is no longer necessary, because now Facebook has an option to archive ALL of your data! Did you know that? I didn’t until just recently!

All you have to do is go into “account settings” and you’ll see this screen:

Click on “download a copy,” and on the next screen click “Start My Archive.”

In the pop-up window, click “Start My Archive” again, and then click “Confirm.”

When your download is ready, Facebook will send you an email with a link. From there you can download your archive. This includes your wall photos, profile pictures, videos, and a webpage file of your Facebook wall, from the beginning up to the present!

Much easier than what I was doing before!

When my son was born, my older brother started a Facebook page for him as a joke, and for the first few years, we both updated it regularly with funny things that he might have said (or thought) as a baby:

Doppleganger week:

And then things that he actually did say as a toddler:

But now that he’s a little older and we don’t use it anymore, I decided to close the account. Before I did, I got the archive of everything that was ever posted on his wall- status updates, birthday wishes, etc!

So I just thought I’d pass along this information. If your Facebook posts are important to you, then this is an easy way to have them all in one place!
