A New Chapter

by Megan

Our Big News
We like our house. We like the town we live in. Daniel likes his job.

But we don’t love any of those things.

So, we are making a change. Now.

We are moving to Surprise, Arizona (the most northwestern suburb of Phoenix, about three hours from where we currently live)… on Saturday.

How It Happened
Last weekend, when we were up in Prescott, my sister-in-law saw a Facebook message from a drama teacher friend of hers, asking if anyone knew someone looking for a choir teaching job. She knew that Daniel was looking, so she told us about it. On Monday morning, he applied online, and by that afternoon, he had scheduled an interview for Tuesday afternoon. We were headed through the area on our way home on Tuesday anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

So Tuesday afternoon I dropped Daniel off at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, and the kids and I drove around to check out the town. It is a gorgeous, new city, with lots of parks. The interview went very well, and I think they would have offered him the job immediately, except they were concerned that he was still under contract in St. David. Within the next 48 hours, Daniel had officially resigned from St. David and officially accepted the job in Surprise!

We are excited. Thrilled. Stressed. Excited. Nervous Terrified. Happy. Sad. Excited.

The Sad Side
Even though we knew we were ready for a change, it is still scary to leave behind what we have here. Like I said, we like it here. And maybe we will hate it somewhere else. So it’s definitely a risk, but it’s one we want to take, and we aren’t going to pass up such a great opportunity!

I will miss some things about living here. I will miss many people who have been so kind and loving to me and my family. I will miss being so involved with the school. When we first moved to St. David, I thought I wouldn’t have any opportunities to be involved with theatre, music, and dance. Instead, I was blessed and  overwhelmed with opportunities. We are two very big fish in a very small pond down here when it comes to all things performing arts! In Surprise, there should be more going on, but I will be less needed.

I was going to coach the cheering squad here next year- something that is on my bucket list. I don’t know if that is something that will ever come my way again. So that is something I’m sad about.

Carter was all set to go to preschool here. We’ve been trying to get him in there for the past two years, and he was finally at the top of the priority list. I don’t think he’s going to get to go in Surprise, so he’ll probably just have to wait until Kindergarten, next school year. For some reason this really hurts my heart. Luckily he seems excited to move (he saw a waterslide while we were driving around Surprise, so he is sold)!

We are currently 40 minutes from my parents’ house, and now we will be about 2 hours and 40 minutes from them! I’m glad to still be close enough to see them often, but it won’t be every week like we are used to.

We own our house, so we will have to deal with putting it on the market and selling it. We currently have three bedrooms, plus a den, plus a large living room, plus a large shed, plus privacy, plus a large yard, all of which we will most likely be giving up for a two-bedroom townhouse.

The Awesome Side
Okay, I had to get all the negative things out of my head and heart, but now onto the good side of our move!

Daniel gets to teach choir at a 5A (huge) high school. He will be teaching only high school, whereas he has been teaching 6-12. The school is 6 years old and has a beautiful performing arts center! He has been teaching choir, band, and theatre at St. David, and now he will just be teaching three choirs, including a show choir, and a few piano lab classes. The new job pays better, and it will be less after-school work for him. No worrying about bands playing at sports events, or rehearsing and scheduling theatre performances. More time to spend with family and maybe for both of us to pursue local professional theatre opportunities.

We will most likely be moving into an apartment complex with a pool, hot tub, fitness center, onsite maintenance, and NEW everything. Less space, but newer, and we will be renting for now, so when we sell our house and decide we need a larger space, we’ll get something bigger.

The town of Surprise is very new, very well-maintained, and seems very family-friendly. There is a huge community park with a lake, a library, a recreation campus, and an aquatic center. They have lots of local events, and from what I can tell so far, it seems like the perfect balance of big city and small town life. We will be back in the Mesa LDS Temple district for awhile, but they are currently building the Phoenix LDS Temple, which will be very close to us, and which is slated to open sometime in 2013 or 2014. Maybe I will get to be part of another TCC!

Target, Kohls, Barnes and Noble, Red Robin, Paradise Bakery, ten minutes from a mall, need I say more? This will be great for my couponing!

We will be closer to most of Daniel’s family than we were. Most of them will be 2 hours away now, rather than 4-5. “Well, isn’t this place a geographical oddity? Two {hours} from everywhere!”

In Conclusion
We are moving. If you read this far, thank you! I try not to write rambling posts with no pictures, but I did need to get all this off my chest! I hope I haven’t come across as ungrateful for our blessings. They are many. We are happy and sad to be moving, but now that I’ve written about the things I am sad about, I feel like I can let them go and just get excited about this new chapter in our lives!

Thank you for reading. From the bottom of my heart.

Yea! Surprise is so nice and new :)! We live in Mesa (closer to the Gilbert/60hwy area) and I love the “newness” of it! It’s so amazing to be 5 min away from EVERYTHING! Good luck with the move–we’re doing the same thing this weekend so I’ll be thinking of you guys.

I love Surprise. We only moved to Waddell because it was time to stop renting and time to buy and the floor plan we wanted was more affordable out here in Waddell than in Surprise …. and it only adds 10 minutes to the drive to everywhere in Surprise so not a big deal breaker….
